The Nilotic Languages Community houses archival and documentary materials for all Nilotic-family languages spoken in Kenya. Nilotic languages belong to the Eastern Sudanic branch of the Nilo-Saharan phylum and are spoken predominantly across the Rift Valley, western Kenya, the lake basin, and stretches of the northern arid frontier.

Nilotic languages in Kenya are characterised by complex nominal case systems (especially in Southern Nilotic), and the Kalenjin cluster is particularly noted for its elaborate age-set vocabulary and initiatory secret registers.

  • Archive for Dholuo, a Western Nilotic language of the Nilo-Saharan family spoken by approximately 5 million people across Nyanza Province in south-western Kenya, with an additional estimated 200,000 speakers in northern Tanzania. It is the predominant language of Nyanza Province. Closely related languages spoken in Uganda and D.R. Congo — including Adhola and Alur — are sometimes regarded as dialects of the same language cluster. Dholuo has two mutually intelligible dialects with only minimal lexical differences. There is no official standard variety, though the South Nyanza dialect is used in education, churches, and broadcasting. Dialect collections: Trans-Yala (Siaya County: Ugenya, Alego, Yimbo, parts of Gem; approximately 70,000 speakers) and South Nyanza (Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and parts of Siaya County — the standard broadcast variety). ISO 639-3: luo. Glottolog: luok1236.
  • Archive for the Kalenjin language cluster: Nandi, Kipsigis, Tugen, Elgeyo, Marakwet, Pokot, Sabaot, Terik, and Okiek varieties. ISO 639-3: kln (Nandi-Markweta); pko (Pokot); spy (Sabaot). Glottolog: kale1245.
  • Archive for Maa language varieties in Kenya: Purko Maasai, Keekonyokie Maasai, Samburu (Sampur), and Chamus (Njemps/Ilchamus). ISO 639-3: mas (Maasai); saq (Samburu, including Chamus). Glottolog: masa1300 (Maasai); samb1315 (Samburu).
